Celebrating Mediterranean Women Artists at Els Magazinos’ ‘Mirades de Dona’ Exhibition in Denia

The Fundació Baleària, in collaboration with Art amb B Association, successfully hosted “Mirades de Dona”, a collective exhibition celebrating Mediterranean women artists. Held at Els Magazinos, this annual event showcased the works of 14 artists exploring themes of identity, empowerment, and cultural expression through various artistic mediums, contributing to the growing recognition of Art in Dénia.

Among the distinguished artists, Jeanne M. Connolly, an American artist living in Dénia, Spain, presented her signature fusion of historical elegance and contemporary artistry with her featured pieces, “Rosa of Valencia” and “Catalina of Valencia”. Part of her acclaimed Silhouette Ladies of Valencia series, these works captured the essence of 1920s Valencian femininity, adorned with hand-painted florals and intricate detailing that embodied the strength and grace of Valencian women.

The Story Behind ‘Rosa of Valencia’ and ‘Catalina of Valencia’

Rosa of Valencia and Catalina of Valencia served as tributes to the timeless elegance of Valencian women—their resilience, their grace, and their deep connection to Spain’s rich cultural heritage. Influenced by Art Deco aesthetics and the distinctive beauty of Valencian traditions, the silhouettes of Rosa and Catalina emerged against delicately textured backgrounds, blending soft hues with bold contrasts.

Both pieces invited viewers into a moment of quiet sophistication, where floral embellishments intertwined with the silhouettes, evoking a sense of nostalgia while engaging in a modern dialogue on feminine identity and artistic legacy.

An Artistic Vision Rooted in Nature and Sustainability

Jeanne M. Connolly’s artistic practice has been deeply influenced by the lush and diverse flora of the Dénia and Valencia region. Her work exists at the intersection of textile art and sustainability, where meticulous craftsmanship meets ecological awareness, further enriching the landscape of Art in Dénia.

Connolly’s artistic project has been a continuous journey to forge a harmonious connection between art and the environment. A Celebration of Mediterranean Women Artists

Participating artists hailed from diverse backgrounds, each offering unique interpretations of womanhood, nature, and cultural identity. Through their collective work, the exhibition fostered a dialogue on the evolving role of women in the art world, challenging boundaries and celebrating creative freedom.

A Look Back at the Exhibition

The inauguration event took place on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 8:00 PM, welcoming art lovers, collectors, and members of the local community to celebrate the artists and their work. The exhibition remained open through March 30, 2025, with daily viewing hours until 9:00 PM.

• Tuesday to Friday: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
• Saturday and Sunday: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM & 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
• Closed on Mondays

Alongside the exhibition, Fundació Baleària organized a series of cultural events throughout March, including:

• Art workshops and demonstrations, featuring traditional craft techniques such as bobbin lace-making and embroidery.
• Live music performances, including a special concert by Spicy Cherries on March 8, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Plaça Dénia és Vida del restaurant A la Fresca.
• Creative talks and artist-led discussions, providing deeper insight into the works and inspirations behind them.
