Budget Friendly Spain Travel Tips
Here are some budget friendly Spain travel tips that we have found to be helpful in our travels here. We live in the town of Denia on a Mediterranean Beach, but these helpful tips for planning your travel budget are great for anywhere that you’re traveling. They may seem obvious and basic, but a reminder can always be good.

- Shop at grocery stores and supermarkets like Mercadona and Aldi, rather than just the central local market.
- Still enjoy the local Mercado Central for certain items – fresh produce and good meats – and learn of when open-air markets take place. For example, in Denia they expand the Mercado Central every Friday to include two blocks of outdoor market of local produce. It’s great to experience and some booths have great lower prices on good food.
- Consider renting an apartment for accommodations, especially if you’re traveling with a group. Having a kitchen, even if it’s small and basic, can help you save cost by cooking some meals rather than eating out all the time. AirBnB is our favorite to use.
- You can rent accommodations that are a little bit further back from the beach, to get lower rates.
- Learn about the public transportation and use the buses. Denia has a nice bus system, the DeniBus, with dedicated lines that go even as far out as the beaches of Las Rotas and to the far opposite end of Las Marines. It’s quite cheap at only 1.50 Euros per person each way and you can get a card with multiple trips to save some money even off of that.
- When wanting to experience the area’s famous Paella dishes, check to see if the restaurant requires a minimum of each person at the table ordering Paella, or if there is only a minimum of 2 ‘raciones’ or portions that have to be ordered. Some of the best restaurants in Denia for Paella, like Casa Federico, only require the latter, which is great for the budget and better for not over-eating
- Timing is powerful – consider visiting Spain during off-season or in the best time of summer to visit Spain.
