How to Enjoy Off-Season in Ibiza (Even Christmas and New Year)

by Last updated Dec 12, 2025 | Published on Dec 10, 2025Balearic Islands, Europe, Feature Story, Spain, Travel

Call me lame if you want, but I’ve always said that I wanted to experience the off-season in Ibiza, rather than visit during the popular summer months. It doesn’t hurt that I already live in a beautiful Mediterranean beach town and the more I’ve traveled the less I’m into high-season tourist crowds. While I love good music and dancing, nightclubs are not quite my thing either.

So it’s no surprise that my first visit to Ibiza (aside from an anchored sailboat), was over Christmas and New Years, smack dab in the middle of winter. We had the opportunity to dog and house sit for friends in the northern part of the island for three weeks. After such an experience, we’re happy to share with you about what we learned so you can determine if off-season in Ibiza is for you and how to make the most of it.

Off-Season in Ibiza Means Less Crowds

Ibiza can get super crowded, like any travel hotspot nowadays. To experience the famed Balearic Island with room to breathe, winter time in Ibiza is the least crowded, especially over the Christmas holidays. Why? Most locals leave the island to travel elsewhere, especially those with families since schools are closed.

Since there’s quite a significant expat population in Ibiza, many of the foreigners leave around the Christmas and New Year holidays to visit family elsewhere in the world and where they’re originally from. During these holidays, there are practically no crowds in a lot of parts of the island, or even Ibiza town for that matter.

During the off-season in Ibiza, exploring pristine beaches, hiking along rosemary-filled sea cliffs, and touring Ibiza town and its charming castle, will feel like private events you get to enjoy all to yourself.

What is Available During Off-Season in Ibiza

Local businesses, especially in the hospitality industry, close for weeks at a time, especially restaurants and hotels which can be closed for months. For example, just around the corner from where we stayed is the 5-star hotel Six Senses Ibiza, which is typically closed from the end of October or beginning of November through the end of April.

GET HOTEL PERKS

As a Fora Pro Travel Advisor, I can get you great perks when I book your stay at the Six Senses Ibiza. For example:

  • 100USD (or USD equivalent) hotel credit per stay
  • Daily complimentary full breakfast for 2 guests
  • Complimentary room upgrade (subject to availability)
  • Local welcome amenity
  • Personalized welcome note
  • Early check-in / late check-out (subject to availability)

See further below for where to stay in Ibiza in the off-season.

In the smaller villages, like where we stayed in Portinatx, even grocery stores can be closed for two or more weeks, especially when it’s the tiny local ones which is all this town has. The closest major supermarket to us was in Santa Eulalia, also known as Santa Eulària des Riu). Similarly things like guided tours will be harder to find, but may not be completely unavailable.

At the same time, this can be a time for great deals and lower prices on practically everything travel-related. From accommodations to car rentals, there will be more availability and off-season pricing.

Off-Season in Ibiza is a Nature-Lover’s Paradise

If you love nature and long for peace and quiet, then off-season in Ibiza is for you. During our stay, we spent time daily hiking trails and enjoying the outdoors in Ibiza since we were dog sitting two large dogs (Rodigian Ridgebacks!). Each day we’d take them for a good long walk right away in the morning and then later just before sunset.

The one word that describes the nature we experienced is ‘rosemary’! That’s right, rosemary. Everywhere we went walking in Ibiza, there was wild rosemary. It smelled amazing and was beautiful. Another characteristic of the landscape in Ibiza is the dramatic seaside cliffs. While there of course inland trails, the ones along the coast provide stunning views. Imagine inhaling the bracing, fresh scent of sea salt, rosemary, and pine while hearing the roar of waves crashing against rocky cliff sides. That is being in nature in Ibiza.

Here are some of the trails that we enjoyed along the northeastern part of Ibiza that we recommend.

Our biggest advice for hiking in Ibiza during off-season, especially in the winter, is to be aware that a lot of people bring their dogs. Many let their dogs off-leash in certain areas of trails.

And of course, let’s not forget the beaches in Ibiza. Swimming at the beach is going to be freaking cold in the winter months. Of course, if you’re into diving and have a good wetsuit, you can enjoy that in the off-season. For enjoying a swim, consider the shoulder seasons (yep, that’s a thing), during the months of October and then in May. Laying out to get some sun can be a different story. There can be warm days with the intense Mediterranean sun, even in winter. But again, it will depend on your tolerance.

Things to Do in Ibiza Off-Season

So what is there to do in Ibiza during the off-season? Why even go? Along with hiking in Ibiza, you can still enjoy spa treatments at certain hotels or local spa providers, great dining and gastronomy experiences at more local restaurants that stay open almost year-round, shopping, and visiting local outdoor markets.

Here are some great markets in Ibiza. Many of them usually have live music and food and drink to enjoy.

  • Mercadillo de San Juan – This flea market is open Sundays, year-round.
  • Vara de Rey is a promenade in Ibiza town that usually has a charming Christmas market from the start of December through early January. Hours vary.
  • Asociación Mercat De Forada – This year-round local market also has food and is open every Saturday.
  • Mercat ambulant de Sant Jordi – Another flea market, located near the airport.
  • Las Dalias de Ibiza – Year round hippy market takes place every Saturday and Sunday. It features handmade products, from soaps to jewelry, at a weekend market with dining options and DJ music.

Most of all, off-season in Ibiza is an ideal time to focus on your wellbeing. Whether it’s a group wellness retreat in Ibiza or a self-led hiatus, there are various opportunities to rejuvenate yourself with yoga and meditation classes, holistic treatments, and wholesome, clean food. Boutique resorts, like the one I mention further below, provide this in the pristine nature and tranquil environments that the island is renowned for.

Visiting Ibiza Old Town in Off-Season

Ibiza old town is where the most activity will be happening in off-season throughout the island. It’s a charming historic center that is wonderful to explore. As mentioned above, through December into early January there is a Christmas market, and you’ll more easily find restaurants, shops, and hotels open.

For historical sites, make sure to see the Catedral d’Eivissa (Castle of Ibiza). From its hilltop perch, you can enjoy gorgeous sea views and stroll along narrow, old world lanes along the castle walls.

When you’re ready for a bite to eat, kick back on the terrace of the charming Croissant Show. They specialize in brunch and have great views of the Portal de ses Taules, the massive arched gate entrance through the old town walls. Across from the restaurant terrace is also the quaint Mercat Vell, a food market for local fruits and vegetables, along with other treats like honey.

The Holidays & Winter in Ibiza

Off-season in Ibiza encompasses a good amount of the year, from November through April. During these months, especially in December and January, it can be cold. With the humidity it’s a damp cold so make sure to bundle up with layers. There tends to be plenty of sunshine.

During this time a lot of restaurants, hotels, and nightclubs are closed. You can still find some things open, but be prepared that especially over the Christmas and New Year holidays, shops and grocery stores will also have some limited hours. The tiny village of Portinatx where we stayed literally had no grocery store open for over two weeks.

TRAVEL ADVISOR INSIGHT

If you’re going to be cooking for your holiday meals, make sure to call one of the great butcher shops in Ibiza town to order your meat in advance. We can highly recommend Carnicería Diego where we got some of the most delicious Galician beef ever to grill for our New Years day lunch.

There will still be things to enjoy, with some restaurants and hotels featuring special Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners, and similarly for celebrating New Year’s Eve. Even some nightclubs tend to be open for bringing in the New Year.

Where to Stay in Ibiza for Off-Season

Above ImageThe stunning coves of Portinatx.

Like I’ve mentioned, a lot of hotels close during the off-season in Ibiza, especially beach-front properties. But there are still some amazing properties that provide an amazing Ibizan stay with the benefit of less people. The best part, I can get you perks at many of them when I book your stay.

The Standard, Ibiza

Located in Ibiza town, The Standard Ibiza is an adults-only property, with the exception of their Casa Privada, a stylish private residence just down the block. The 5-star hotel features one of the few rooftop pools in Ibiza town (may be closed during certain times of the year), along with restaurant Jara for farm-to-table cuisine and amazing cocktails.

Perks when I book your stay at The Standard, Ibiza:

  • Upgrade to next room category, based upon availability at check-in
  • Complimentary welcome drink per guest, per stay (voucher provided)
  • Welcome treat in room on arrival
  • Complimentary daily breakfast (max 2 guests)

Montesol Experimental Ibiza

This 5-star boutique hotel is also located in the center of Ibiza town, right on the charming Vara de Rey promenade. Built in 1933, it features 33 rooms and is an iconic part of Ibiza’s history. Their restaurant, Sabbaba Montesol, serves Israeli and Levantine fusion cuisine with fresh and local produce, while the rooftop bar serves up cocktails with great sunset views.

Perks when I book your stay at Montesol Experimental Ibiza:

  • Upgrade to next room category, based upon availability at check-in
  • Complimentary welcome drink per guest, per stay (max 2 guests)

Eurostars Ibiza

For a stay just a block from the beach but also on the edge of Ibiza town, the Eurostars Ibiza is a great option, especially if you’re looking for apartment amenities. The 4-star property is an aparthotel featuring kitchens and terraces with sea views. With multi-bedroom options that can sleep up to six people, it’s ideal for families and small groups. There is also a restaurant, bar, and pool.

Can Vistabella Boutique Resort

If you’re looking for a wellness escape, then Can Vistabella Boutique Resort is a hidden gem tucked away in the beautiful nature of Ibiza. The well-rated resort is home to charming rooms, suites, and bungalows that will immerse you in the iconic Ibizan style and vibe. The heart of the resort is their focus on wellbeing, providing activities such as daily yoga and meditation classes, along with holistic treatments like sound therapy, and more. Enjoy their Essència Restaurant for Mediterranean, farm-to-table cuisine in a romantic setting.
